Shifting cultivation is the major occupation of people in Mizoram as above 50% people are engaged in its practices. Because of low output from shifting cultivation and its negative impact on environment, the Government of Mizoram has implemented New Land Use Policy (NLUP). This has resulted in practicing permanent cultivation and conversion of shifting plots into terraced fields. Figure 1 shows that the farmers are constructing terraced fields even along the high slope gradient.
