Change and Opportunity- Skiing in the Himalaya

November 15, 2017
Traditionally, no skiing culture has existed in most of the Hindu Kush and Himalaya (HKH) region. Until young tourism students and mountain guides from all over Nepal came together in 2015 and founded the Nepal Ski and Snowboarding Foundation. They want to establish the sport in their country and eventually also guide foreign visitors on skis into the mountain areas and share their beauty through a common passion.
Many changes and interrelated developments affect their work. First, the fastly progressing infrastructure of Nepal improves the accessibility to the mountains. Second, travelling in the HKH majestic valleys and impressive passes is always also a cultural experience with locals. The social progress and encroaching globalization into the most remote places shapes the travels of the Nepalese ski enthusiasts.
Third, climate change and receding glaciers threaten the very idea of snow sports in the Himalaya and Hindukush region. This motivates the young group even more to explore many slopes before it is too late. Every year they go together with Nepalese students and international friends to several ski and snowboarding travels and spread the passion for winter sports.
This way, in times of a world connected by social media, skiing and social entrepreneurship may raise awareness for the fast environmental changes in the Himalayas.
  • Skiing images from Nepal bring the area and its fragile mountain ecosystems onto the world's smartphone, tablet and computer screens.
